We believe that this section, Jesus prays for His disciples, the Eleven that are with Him. We get that primarily because of the words that follow: ““I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,” (John 17:20, ESV).
To preach this text I’m going to ask a few W5 type questions like, “Who is Jesus praying for”; “Why is He praying for them”; and “What does He pray for them”? It is this last point that we will linger over for we find that there are 3 specific petitions that Christ prays for on behalf of His disciples.
